You should schedule maintenance once per year, ideally before heating season begins. Boilers are known for having very small, easy to fix, problems that turn into a very big deal if left unattended.  Having expert eyes on your boiler once in a while can save thousands of dollars in the long run.

Uneven heating often results from air trapped in the lines, faulty zone valves, or circulator pump issues. Your technician uses zone-by-zone testing and pressure readings to restore balanced heat throughout your home.

Most repairs take 30 minutes, but some can last several hours. The biggest determinant on how long a repair takes is whether or not you have valves allowing isolation to the part.  If the whole system needs to be drained and bled of air that can add a lot of time.  This is why if you do not have isolation valves we always recommend spending a little more and adding some anytime we do a repair that involves opening your water system. This will save time and money on any future repairs you need. 

Frequent breakdowns, rising energy bills, and systems older than 30 years often signal replacement time. A cracked heat exchanger (you will know this because water will be leaking out of the inside of your boiler) means you need a new boiler. Other than that, it is usually repairable, and your decision as to how much you want to spend on an aging boiler, before starting over with a new one. 

We do not. But we are happy to replace it with one that operates on natural gas, which is cleaner and will save you on your energy costs. 

Sometimes customers think they need a new boiler when really what they need is a component change. When you get a new boiler, all that is included is the boiler itself. Zone valves, expansion tank, air eliminators, fill valve, etc, are all separate. Sometimes the boiler is fine and all those extras are faulty. A new boiler will not solve your problem! We can change the components and install isolation valves to the boiler. You are not putting any money into old equipment because someday when you change your boiler we simply isolate it, quickly swap it, and all those components remain. So sometimes we change just the components, sometimes we change just the boiler, and sometimes we change both. Just Right will help you decide which option is right for you and your budget.

We love energy saving equipment at Just Right, that’s why we sell Mitsubishi mini splits, 97% efficient furnaces, etc. But when it comes to boilers, we strongly advise against anything other than a good old fashioned cast iron boiler. Cast iron boilers can last 50 years when maintained properly, and are generally easy to repair. High efficiency boilers commonly fail in 8 years, and almost never make it to 15. They require extensive maintenance, and when they fail parts often need to be ordered and shipped in… while you wait in a freezing cold home. Just Right will replace a high-efficiency boiler if you already have one and chimney venting is not an option, but if you want to trade in your cast iron for a high efficiency, we will politely decline the job.
